General guidance for young and established trees
- Watering: newly planted trees need regular water for their first 3 growing seasons — roughly 50–100 litres per week during dry spells (April–September), given slowly in one go rather than a little every day.
- Mulch the root zone (5–8 cm, kept clear of the trunk) to keep moisture in; avoid compacting or paving the soil under the crown.
- Pruning: remove dead, damaged and crossing branches; keep cuts small and just outside the branch collar. Avoid heavy pruning during the bird breeding season (roughly mid-March to mid-July).
- Pests & diseases: never remove oak processionary moth (eikenprocessierups) nests yourself — the hairs are irritating; report them to your municipality.
